It can be but there is something you can do to make it less scary. Try using OpenDNS.

Every parent is concerned about their child's welfare on the internet. Using OpenDNS can help alleviate some of those fears with over 50 customizable  filtering categories. You can pick as many or as few as you want. You can also block specific websites or allow websites that you always want access to.

It will also let you know if the site you are visiting is fraudulent. To date they have blocked nearly 250,000 "phishing" attempts. This way the next time you visit your banking website you can be sure that it is the real one.

OpenDNS also took a proactive approach and blocked the websites that the Conficker virus is communicating with to update itself. So even if you were infected it would help stop the spread. By visiting the OpenDNS website it would also notify you if you were infected!
